Poolside Papaya

Harper stood at the edge of the **pool**, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The water shimmered invitation, but her stomach churned with nerves. This was *the* party—Lila's annual summer bash, where social hierarchies shifted like tectonic plates.

"Harper! You made it!" Lila called, waving from her floatie. "Get in! The water's perfection!"

Harper hesitated. She'd been **running** cross country since freshman year, her legs strong from miles of pavement and trail, yet somehow standing at the edge of this pool felt harder than any race. At least in racing, she knew the course.

She dipped her toe in. Cool. Refreshing. And then—

"Harper, try this!" Jordan appeared at her side, holding out a wedge of fruit on a paper plate. "My mom's obsessed with exotic stuff. It's **papaya**."

Harper stared at the **orange** flesh, dotted with tiny black seeds. She'd never seen it outside of textbook diagrams. "I've never..."

"Never had papaya?" Jordan's grin was easy, effortless. "You're missing out. It's like mango's cooler cousin."

Harper took the plate, their fingers brushing. Jordan—*Jordan*, with his tousled hair and lacrosse jersey and the way he laughed like he didn't care who was watching. Harper's heart did something complicated.

She took a bite. Sweet, musky, nothing like the candy-colored snacks at school parties. "It's... different."

"Different is good," Jordan said. "My sister says we need more **vitamin** C or whatever. But I think she just likes saying it makes her athletic." He splashed water at her. "Come in already!

Harper laughed, and for the first time all summer, the nervous knot in her chest loosened. She set down the papaya, took a breath, and jumped.

The water enveloped her, cool and shocking and perfect. When she surfaced, Jordan was grinning, Lila was waving her over, and Harper realized something important: the terrifying edge of the pool? It wasn't scary at all once you jumped.
