Poolside Panic Attack

dogswimminggoldfish

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. Everyone else was already splashing around, laughing and shouting, while she felt like she'd stepped into some kind of social experiment she hadn't signed up for. This was exactly why she'd spent the last month inventing increasingly elaborate excuses to avoid Jake's party.

"Hey! You coming in or what?" Jake called from the middle of the pool, water dripping from his perfect hair. His Golden Retriever, Buster, was paddling happily beside him, looking way more comfortable than Maya felt.

"Yeah, uh, give me a sec!" Maya squeaked. Her heart was doing that thing where it tried to escape through her throat. She'd barely mastered the art of not drowning in the shallow end of the community pool, and now everyone was expecting her to just casually dive into the deep end like it was no big deal?

Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Katie from her English class sitting on a lounge chair, staring intently at a tiny plastic bag on the table. Inside swam a single goldfish, looking about as confused as Maya felt.

"That's weird," Maya muttered to herself, but honestly? She'd take a weird goldfish over the impending doom of forced social swimming.

She crept over to Katie, drawn in by the sheer randomness of it. "Is that... is that a fish?"

Katie looked up, startled. "Oh! Yeah, my brother won it at the carnival and decided it would be hilarious to bring it here. He's such a troll."

For the next twenty minutes, Maya and Katie sat there watching the goldfish swim in tiny circles, making up an elaborate backstory about how it was actually a cursed prince from an underwater kingdom. Maya actually forgot about the swimming thing for a while. Katie was funny and random and didn't once ask Maya why she wasn't in the pool.

Then Jake's dog Buster shook himself off right next to them, spraying water everywhere. The goldfish bag went flying.

"Oh my god!" Katie screamed.

Maya didn't think. She just lunged for the bag, catching it mid-air like she'd suddenly developed some kind of fish-saving superpower. But the momentum sent her tumbling forward—straight into the pool.

Cold water swallowed her whole. She flailed for a second before remembering she actually could swim, sort of. When she broke the surface, spluttering and gasping, everyone was staring.

Then they started cheering.

"Maya saves the fish!" Jake shouted, and suddenly the Golden Retriever was barking like it was the greatest thing ever.

Katie high-fived her from the edge of the pool. "You're literally a superhero now."

Maybe she'd never be the cool girl who dove into pools without overthinking it. But as she held up the goldfish bag like a trophy, Maya realized she didn't have to be. She was just Maya—sometimes awkward, occasionally heroic, and apparently, pretty good at saving fish from water-related disasters.
