Poolside Panic and Papaya

Maya's iPhone 8 buzzed in her pocket as she stood at the edge of Taylor's inground pool, clutching her towel like a security blanket. Every other girl had an iPhone 14 or 15, their screens glowing with TikToks and group chats she wasn't part of. Her fraying charging cable dangled from the outdoor outlet—a last-minute rescue mission after realizing her phone was at 4%.

"Yo Maya, you swimming or what?" called Jordan, the junior varsity swim team captain who somehow made everything look effortless.

"Yeah, just... charging first," Maya mumbled, feeling the heat rise in her cheeks. Stupid to forget her cable at home. Stupider to borrow her mom's old one that barely held a connection.

"Omg try this papaya!" Taylor squealed from the patio table, where she'd arranged an aesthetic fruit platter like something from Pinterest. "It's literally so good, my mom got it from Whole Foods."

Maya glanced at the exotic orange fruit. She'd never had papaya—her family stuck to apples and bananas from the discount bin. But she grabbed a slice anyway, determined not to seem basic.

"This is... actually fire," she admitted, surprised by the sweet, melon-like flavor.

"Right?" Taylor beamed, and for a second, Maya felt like maybe she wasn't completely invisible.

Then Jordan cannonballed into the pool, sending a wave of chlorinated water cascading over everything—including Maya's phone.

"My phone!" Maya scrambled to save it, heart hammering. The charging cable sparked and died. Her screen flickered once, then went black.

But as Jordan surfaced, grinning, and everyone started laughing, Maya realized something: nobody cared. Taylor was already tossing her a towel. Jordan was challenging her to a race. And somewhere in the chaos, that slice of papaya had transformed her from observer to participant.

"Whatever," Maya said, dropping the dead phone onto her towel. "I'm swimming."

For the first time all summer, she dove in without looking back.
