Poolside Panic

The pool water glittered like someone had spilled a million diamonds across the surface, but Maya couldn't appreciate it. Not with her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"You coming in or what?" Jordan called from the deep end, droplets streaming down his arms. The same Jordan she'd been crushing on since seventh grade, now a sophomore with actual muscles and a smile that made her forget basic English.

"Yeah! Just... warming up!" Maya called back, her voice cracking. Smooth. Real smooth.

She'd barely survived the spinach smoothie her mom had made for breakfast—"It's for your energy, honey!"—but now she was wondering if those leafy green chunks were still decorating her teeth. She swiped her tongue across her front teeth. Nothing. Probably.

The social dynamics of pool parties were lethal. You had the cannonball crew (currently splash-bombing everyone in sight), the tanning squad (sprawled like lizards on beach towels), and the mysterious floaters who just drifted around looking effortlessly cool. Maya? She was currently in the "standing awkwardly at the edge" category.

"Maya!" Jordan swam over, resting his arms on the pool deck. Water dripped from his hair. "Your hair looks really good today."

Her brain short-circuited. "Thanks! I mean—thanks. It's the humidity. Or something."

What was WRONG with her?

She spotted her best friend Chen by the snack table, desperately trying to signal something. Chen was pointing at her own teeth, making wild "get it out!" gestures.

Oh no.

The spinach. It was back there, mocking her, destroying her life one social interaction at a time.

"So, Jordan..." Maya started, already turning away. "I was just gonna—"

"Maya, wait." He reached out, wet fingers brushing her wrist. "I've been wanting to talk to you all day."

She froze. Spinach crisis temporarily suspended.

"Really?"

"Yeah." He grinned, and there it was—a tiny piece of parsley stuck in his own teeth.

Maya started laughing. She couldn't help it. The relief washed over her like cool water on a blistering day. Jordan looked confused, then joined in.

"What?" he asked. "Do I have something in my teeth?"

"Spinach," she said, finally feeling like she could breathe. "And I do too."

They stood there, two flawed humans with green stuff in their teeth, laughing as the pool party chaos continued around them. Maya took a breath, then another, and finally jumped in.
