Poolside Panic
Maya's hands shook as she texted Jake from outside the community pool gate. 'You coming?' Three dots appeared, then disappeared. Then: 'Can't. Family dinner.' Of course. The one party she'd finally worked up the nerve to attend, and her backup wasn't showing.
Inside, the seniors lounged like they owned the place. Chloe, with her perfect beach waves and waterproof mascara, tossed her hair back in slow motion. Beside her, Tyler's golden retriever puppy bounded around the pool deck, chasing a neon tennis ball. 'Buster, sit!' someone laughed. The dog ignored them completely, tongue lolling in a goofy grin that made Maya crack a smile despite her nerves.
She adjusted her swimsuit straps for the tenth time. Her hair, frizzy from humidity, was already starting to revolt. Why had she agreed to this? She was barely friends with these people, and here she was, about to crash their end-of-summer blowout.
'Hey, you coming in?' Tyler called, gesturing to the pool.
'Soon!' Maya lied, finger-combing her hair. 'Just, uh, warming up.'
He nodded and turned back to his friends. Someone mentioned something about padel, and Maya pretended to check her phone. She had no idea what padel even was. Some sport? A dance move? Whatever it was, she was about to be exposed as the clueless freshman who didn't belong.
Then she heard it—a meow from the other side of the fence.
Maya stepped closer and peeked through the wooden slats. A scrawny calico cat sat on the sidewalk, staring at her with yellow eyes. It looked ridiculous, this tiny cat facing down a party of loud teenagers.
'Psst,' Maya whispered. 'Hey, little guy.'
The cat blinked slowly, completely unimpressed.
Suddenly, Tyler's dog came bounding over, tail wagging like crazy. The cat didn't even flinch. Just stared the dog down like, please. You're not worth my time.
The whole group erupted in laughter. 'Did you see that?' someone shouted. 'The cat just owned Buster!'
Even Chloe was cracking up. And somehow, Maya found herself laughing too. Not fake laughter, but real, can't-breathe laughter.
'Shut up,' Tyler groaned, scratching the dog's ears. 'My dog got roasted by a cat.'
'You should challenge the cat to a padel match,' someone joked. 'Bet it would crush you.'
Maya finally had to ask. 'What's padel?'
Everyone stared. Then Chloe groaned. 'Freshman. Cute, but clueless.' But she was smiling. 'It's like tennis and squash had a baby. We're playing tomorrow at the rec center if you want to get destroyed.'
Maya's eyes widened. 'I... actually play. My dad's obsessed.'
'Then you're on my team,' Tyler decided immediately. 'We need all the help we can get against Chloe.'
'Excuse me?' Chloe flipped her hair. 'I'll have you know I went undefeated last season.'
'Yeah, against middle schoolers,' someone shot back.
As the sun dipped lower, painting the sky pink and orange, Maya sat with them by the pool. Her hair was still frizzy. She was still the youngest one there. But for the first time all summer, she wasn't watching from the sidelines.
Her phone buzzed. Jake: 'Dinner was canceled. You still at the party?'
Maya smiled and typed back: 'Yeah. I'm staying.'
She set her phone down and joined the conversation. The dog curled up at her feet like they'd been friends forever. Somewhere beyond the fence, the cat was probably still judging them all.
And honestly? Maya wouldn't have had it any other way.
