Poolside Padel, Broken Lies
Summer at the Oakwood Club meant one thing: padel courts on one side, glistening pool on the other, and every teenager in town caught somewhere between.
Lena adjusted her grip on the racquet, sweat trickling down her back. The July heat was no joke, and neither was Tyler—the resident bully who'd made it his mission to ruin everyone's good time. He stood by the deep end, surrounded by his crew, laughing way too loud at something.
"You gonna serve or what?" Maya called from across the net, bouncing on her toes.
Lena shook herself. Right. Padel. Focus.
But her eyes kept drifting to the pool house where Jason—her Jason—was talking to some girl she'd never seen before. Something felt off. The girl kept glancing around like she was casing the place, phone angled weirdly under her arm.
A spy. Seriously? In Oakwood?
Lena missed the ball entirely. It thunked into the fence.
"Earth to Lena," Maya said, wiping her forehead. "You've been weird all day."
"That girl by the snack bar," Lena lowered her voice. "She's taking pictures of people. Like, zooming in on their stuff."
Maya squinted. "You think she's creeping on locker combos?"
"Or worse. Tyler's crew leaves their phones everywhere when they swim."
Connection snapped into place. The new girl. Tyler's sudden smugness yesterday. The rumors about cash going missing from locker rooms.
Lena grinned slowly. Sly as a fox, her dad always said when she figured something out.
"We're going full detective mode."
They spent the next hour playing terrible padel and excellent spy. Lena served into the net while Maya "accidentally" wandered past the snack bar four times. By 3 PM, they had it: the girl wasn't just taking pictures—she was filming Tyler's crew leaving their bags unguarded, timing it perfectly.
"She's working him," Lena realized. "Using Tyler as the bull in her china shop."
"And he has no idea," Maya added, almost sympathetic.
Almost.
They didn't snitch. Sometimes watching a bull learn his lesson was justice enough. But Lena caught Jason's eye across the pool and winked—a tiny secret shared in the chaos of summer, where nothing stayed simple for long.
"Rematch tomorrow?" Maya asked, gathering her gear.
"Only if I get to spy on your serve."
