Poolside Padel

My dad's old **baseball** cap sat crooked on my head, sweat collecting in the band like a tiny swimming pool. Summer before sophomore year, and I was stuck serving drinks at the country club where the popular kids played **padel** — that tennis-squash hybrid nobody outside the wealthy zip codes had heard of.

"Yo, Hat Boy!" Trevor called out. Everyone called him Bull behind his back. The guy was built like a tank and had about as much subtlety. "More lemonade, starving people here."

I grabbed the pitcher, my hand shaking. The padel court was right next to the **pool**, so I got an eyeful of Chloe in her bikini every time I walked over. She was laughing at something Bull said, her ponytail swinging like it had its own personality.

That's when I saw it — Bull's signature snapback, sitting on the bench beside his towel. Championship game last year. He'd never shut up about it.

The idea hit me like a foul ball to the face.

I swapped hats. My dad's grungy baseball cap for Bull's pristine snapback. Pulled the brim low. Felt different. Felt powerful.

"Trevor!" I shouted, my voice suddenly steady. "Your form's trash. You're gripping the racquet too tight."

The whole court went silent. Bull whipped around, ready to tear me apart, but then he saw his hat on my head. He paused, confused.

"Wait, you actually know padel?" Chloe asked, squinting at me.

"My uncle's got a court," I lied smoothly. "Been playing since middle school."

Bull's expression shifted from anger to uncertainty. For once, the playing field felt level.

"Show me, then," he said, tossing me a racquet.

I played like my life depended on it. And somewhere between the first serve and Chloe's impressed smile, I realized I wasn't pretending anymore. The hat didn't make me cool — letting go of my fear did.

Later, when I traded Bull his hat back for my dad's old cap, he actually nodded. Respect.

"Same time next week, Hat Boy?"

I smiled. "See you there, Bull."

The old baseball cap didn't feel so heavy anymore. It fit just right.
