Poolside Metamorphosis

pyramidzombiepoolbearrunning

Everything changed at Jesse's pool party, the night before senior year. I was **running** on pure caffeine and anxiety, mostly because Sarah—the girl I'd been crushing on since seventh grade—was actually talking to me.

"You look like a **zombie**," she said, splashing water at me. "Did you even sleep?"

"Maybe three hours," I admitted, clutching my phone like a lifeline. "My dad kept calling about college applications."

Jesse, meanwhile, was trying to organize everyone into a human **pyramid** for Instagram. "Come on, guys! This is gonna be viral!"

The pyramid collapsed twice before they got it right. I ended up at the bottom, somehow staring up at Sarah's bare feet, feeling like a total loser. But she just laughed and pulled me up.

"Smooth," she said. And something in her voice made my stomach do backflips.

Later, when everyone left, it was just me and Sarah sitting on the **pool** edge, legs in the water. She pulled this ancient stuffed **bear** from her bag—one of those childhood relics you're too embarrassed to throw away but too old to keep.

"My mom gave me this when I started kindergarten," she said, running her thumb over the bear's missing eye. "She said it would keep me safe. Kinda stupid, right?"

"No," I said softly. "I still have my blanket from when I was five. It's in my closet."

She looked at me, really looked at me, like she was seeing something real for the first time.

"We're all just pretending to be grown up, aren't we?"

I nodded. The pool lights reflected in her eyes, making them look like galaxies.

"Yeah. But maybe that's okay."

She took my hand. Her palm was warm and slightly trembling, and I realized she was nervous too.

"Maybe," she whispered.

We sat there until dawn, two terrified almost-adults holding onto childhood ghosts while the world kept spinning, beautiful and terrifying and ours.
