Poolside Metamorphosis

waterzombiehatbear

The chlorine stung my eyes as I stared at the **water** shimmering in the afternoon sun. Another summer pool party, another social minefield to navigate. I adjusted my dad's oversized fedora—my safety **hat**, my armor against having to actually make conversation.

"You look like a zombie," Maya said, dropping onto the lounge chair beside me. "Dead girl walking."

"I feel like one," I admitted, watching the popular crowd splash and scream. "These things exhaust me."

"Then why do you come?"

Good question. Same reason I wore this ridiculous hat—because I wanted to be someone who belonged at parties like this. Someone comfortable and cool, not the girl who brought a book to every gathering and sat in corners reading.

That's when I saw it across the pool—Jordan, my crush since seventh grade, wearing those stupid **bear** swim trunks I'd secretly found adorable since I'd noticed them freshman year. He waved.

"He's looking at you," Maya hissed. "Do something cool."

Something cool. Instead, I stood up too fast, caught my foot on the chair leg, and performed a spectacular face-plant onto the concrete. My hat flew off. The whole pool area went quiet.

"You alive?" Jordan called out, grinning.

I lifted my head, face burning. "Zombie mode activated."

To my surprise, people laughed. Not mean laughter—actual laughter. Jordan dove into the pool and swam over to where I'd ended up near the edge.

"That was epic," he said, dripping wet. "Wanna join the undead?" He splashed **water** at me.

And just like that, the invisible wall I'd built around myself dissolved. I kicked off my sandals and jumped in, hat forgotten on the ground.

Maybe transformation wasn't about becoming someone else. Maybe it was about finally letting yourself be the person who trips, laughs, and dives in anyway.
