Poolside Masquerade

Leo adjusted his sunglasses, trying to look like he belonged at the country club pool. The golden afternoon light reflected off the water, making everything shimmer like some dream he wasn't sure he wanted to wake up from. His dad had remarried into money six months ago, and suddenly Leo was thrust into a world where kids wore designer swimsuits and discussed summer homes like they were discussing lunch options.

"You're staring again," Marcus whispered, knocking his shoulder. Marcus was the only person who'd actually talked to Leo like a normal human being since he'd started showing up here. "Chloe's not gonna magically notice you if you keep watching her like a goldfish in a bowl."

Leo rolled his eyes. "Shut up. I'm not staring."

"Sure. That's why you've been 'casually' positioned near her padel game for twenty minutes." Marcus smirked. "You know she's only into guys who actually play, right?"

Leo's stomach did that familiar flip-flop thing. Padel was this trendy racquet sport that everyone at the club seemed obsessed with, but Leo had never even held a racquet. "I could learn."

"Bro, you can barely walk across the deck without tripping over your own feet," Marcus laughed. "Besides, Chloe's ex is like, championship level at padel. You'd be competing with a legacy."

A scream cut through their conversation. Not a playful scream, but something real and terrified.

Leo's head snapped toward the pool fence where it backed against the wooded area. A massive brown bear lumbered through the manicured bushes, blinking in the sunlight like it was just as confused about being there as everyone else.

"WHOA WHAT THE—" Marcus jumped up, knocking over his vitamin water.

Chloe and her padel partner froze mid-swing. The bear huffed, looked around at the panicked teenagers scattering everywhere, then turned and ambled back into the woods like it had just remembered it left the stove on.

The silence that followed was absolute.

Then Chloe locked eyes with Leo from across the pool. She started laughing, this genuine, surprised laugh that crinkled her nose. "Did that seriously just happen?"

Leo nodded, still processing it. "I think I almost died from excitement and terror simultaneously."

"That was literally insane," she said, walking over. "I'm Chloe, by the way. And you are?"

"Leo," he managed, suddenly aware of his heart racing. "I'm Leo."

She grinned. "Well Leo, looks like we both survived our first bear encounter. That's gotta count for something, right?"

Marcus winked at him from behind Chloe's back.

Maybe, Leo thought, he didn't need to become someone else to fit in here. Maybe the bear had just done him the weirdest favor ever.
