Poolside Makeover
Jordan's hands shook as she tied the goggles around her head. The chlorine smell of the pool **water** had always grounded her before races, but today her stomach did backflips. Fresh from a DIY haircut disaster that left her looking like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket, the last thing she wanted was to be seen in a swimsuit.
"Nice **hair**, Jordan," called Tyler from the starting blocks, the senior team captain who made everyone's life miserable. The whole pool deck went silent. Someone snickered.
Her face burned. She'd spent forty-five minutes this morning crying in the bathroom after her sister's "trim" gone wrong. Now everyone was staring. She considered faking sick, but then she'd have to explain why to her dad, who'd driven two hours and spent half his paycheck on entry fees.
"It's called the imperfect look, Tyler," Jordan shot back, surprised at her own voice. "You wouldn't understand. Your whole aesthetic is 'try hard.'"
A few people actually laughed. Tyler's jaw dropped.
"What did you say?"
"You heard me." Jordan adjusted her messed-up bangs. "I'm here to swim, not Instagram." She stepped onto the block, her uneven hair bobbing with every movement. Whatever. She'd own it.
The whistle blew. Jordan hit the **water** like she was trying to drown Tyler's comeback. Stroke, breathe, stroke. Her messed-up **hair** streamed behind her like a weird water flag. Who cared? It was aerodynamic now, technically.
She touched the wall, chest heaving, and looked up at the board. First place. By two seconds.
"Whatever," Tyler muttered, refusing to make eye contact as he stalked away from his third-place finish.
Jordan's dad was beaming from the stands, oblivious to the haircut drama. Her teammates were high-fiving her, actually asking for tips on the new look. Maybe it wasn't so bad after all.
Sometimes the worst mornings turned into the best stories. And Tyler could keep being a **bull** in a china shop — Jordan was busy winning races and rocking the chaos.
