Poolside Lightning Strikes

Maya's heart did this nervous little flutter thing every time she walked past the country club **pool**. Which was ridiculous, because she was sixteen and shouldn't still care about the popular kids' judgment, but here she was, clutching her **padel** racquet like it was a shield while the Taylor squad lounged on pool chairs in matching bikinis.

"You coming to the tournament next weekend?" Tyler asked, appearing beside her with that easy confidence that made her stomach twist.

"Maybe?" Maya lied, even though she'd been practicing serves against her garage wall until her arms ached. Padel was supposed to be her ticket to finally belonging at this stupid club, instead of just being the girl who brought a **spinach** smoothie to summer parties while everyone else chugged Diet Coke.

Tyler's grin made her knees go actual liquid. "My partner bailed. Wanna sub?"

YES. THE ANSWER WAS YES.

"Cool," she managed, like her soul wasn't screaming.

But then came the actual match, where Maya's brain decided to abandon her completely. She missed serves. She tripped. She hit the ball into the net so many times she wanted to dissolve into the earth.

"You good?" Tyler asked during a break, handing her a water bottle.

"I'm—" She started to give her standard "I'm fine" but then **lightning** cracked across the sky, sudden and sharp, and something in her chest just snapped.

"Actually? I'm terrified I'm gonna humiliate myself and never recover socially."

Tyler blinked, then burst out laughing. "Bro, I've been playing for three years and I still miss basic shots. We're literally playing for fun, not the Olympics."

The second set, Maya stopped overthinking. She smashed the ball, laughed when she tripped, didn't die when Taylor's friends watched. And when she finally landed this perfect shot down the line, Tyler high-fived her so hard her palm stung.

"See?" he said. "You're actually good."

Maybe, Maya thought, diving into the pool later with her clothes on because sometimes you just gotta embrace the chaos. Maybe she didn't have to be perfect to fit in. Maybe being the spinach smoothie girl who played terrible padel but laughed about it was enough.

Lightning flashed again, and this time, she didn't flinch.
