Poolside Lightning Strike

I felt like a total zombie at Tyler's pool party, which was ridiculous considering I'd been hyping myself up for this all week. Tyler, the cute junior who sat behind me in bio, had actually invited me. And here I was, hovering awkwardly by the snack table while everyone else splashed around like they'd known each other since kindergarten.

His golden retriever, Buster, kept nudging my hand with that wet-nose persistence that demanded attention. I knelt down to scratch behind his ears—honestly, the best conversation I'd had all night.

"You're not gonna swim?"

I looked up to find Maya, Tyler's sister, holding out an orange slice like it was some kind of peace offering. She had this way of looking at people like she could see straight through all the awkwardness.

"Maybe later," I mumbled, taking the orange. My fingers brushed hers—her nail polish was chipped, little flecks of teal catching the pool lights.

"Tyler's been asking about you," she said casually, like she wasn't dropping a nuclear bomb of information. "He thinks you're smart. Like, actually smart, not school-smart."

My face burned. I focused way too hard on peeling my orange.

Then it happened—that sudden Florida lightning crack that splits the sky open, followed immediately by thunder that rattled your chest. The pool cleared in seconds, everyone screaming and grabbing towels like the water was suddenly lava.

Everyone except me and Maya, both frozen under the patio overhang while rain sheeted down around us in this crazy curtain. She looked at me, then burst out laughing.

"We're gonna get soaked," she said, grabbing my hand. "Race you to the pool house!"

We bolted through the downpour, her laugh mixing with the thunder, and in that ridiculous sprint through a summer storm, something shifted. Maybe it wasn't about Tyler at all. Maybe it was about finding the person who'd stand in the rain with you instead of running for cover.

The next morning, I woke up to three texts from Tyler and a new contact in my phone: Maya 🌧️
