Poolside Lightning

The summer storm hit just as Maya's pool party was getting good. One minute, everyone was vibing to the playlist blasting through Bluetooth speakers, and the next—bam. The sky went purple, lightning crackling like static electricity.

"Cable's out!" Jordan groaned, holding up his phone like it was a dead body. "No WiFi, no signal, nothing."

Maya's golden retriever, Buster, started barking at the thunder, bouncing around the pool deck like a manic fuzzy orange. Someone yelled, and in the chaos, Maya watched her carefully planned perfect party unravel.

Her crush, Leo, was stuck on the other side of the pool, looking as awkward as she felt. They'd been dancing around each other all summer—lingering glances in AP Bio, shared memes during study hall, the whole will-they-won't-the situation that everyone noticed but nobody mentioned.

Then Jenna, who'd been complaining about feeling "off" all week, pulled a bottle of gummy vitamins from her bag. "Whatever, I need my daily dose of health while we sit here in misery."

Maya cracked up. Something about Jenna's dramatic gesture broke the tension. Suddenly everyone was laughing, the party's awkwardness dissolving like sugar in water.

Leo swam across the pool—not smooth, not graceful, but determined. He climbed out, dripping wet, and sat beside her.

"So," he said, casual as anything. "Worst party ever or best party ever?"

Maya looked around. Her dog was now passed out on a lounge chair. Jenna was sharing gummy vitamins with random people like they were contraband. Jordan had given up on technology and was actually talking to real humans.

"Definitely the weirdest," Maya said.

"Cool." Leo's knee brushed hers. "Wanna hang out sometime? Like, when we have electricity?"

Outside, another flash of lightning illuminated the whole backyard. Maya smiled, feeling that electric-storm feeling in her chest that had nothing to do with the weather. "Yeah. I'd like that."

Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you plan. They're the ones that happen when everything goes wrong, but somehow, that makes everything right.
