Poolside Lightning

The orange solo cup trembled in my hand. Classic nervous tell. Around me, the pool party raged—kids I'd known since kindergarten suddenly transformed into these confident, semi-adult strangers in swimsuits. I adjusted my beanie, pulling it lower over my forehead. Wearing a hat to a pool party? Peak loser move. But I wasn't ready to reveal the haircut disaster my mom had inflicted yesterday.

"Yo, Marcus!" Jake appeared beside me, dripping wet. "You gonna swim or what?"

"Maybe later," I mumbled.

Behind us, someone had put on a zombie movie marathon. The screen showed groaning undead staggering through an abandoned mall. I felt like one of them—trapped, shambling, not quite alive. Three weeks into freshman year, and I still hadn't figured out how to exist in this new social hierarchy. Everyone else seemed to have received the manual. I was still fumbling with the controls.

Then Lena materialized. THE Lena. Junior varsity soccer captain, owner of a smile that could restart hearts. She sat on the pool edge, feet in the water, not swimming. Just... sitting.

"Hate these things," she said suddenly, gesturing at the chaos. "Everyone pretending to have fun."

I blinked. Was she talking to me?

"Yeah," I found myself saying. "Pretty much."

"Your hat," she said. "Indoors? At a pool? Bold choice."

My face burned. "Haircut gone wrong. My mom's a salon school dropout."

Lena laughed. Actually laughed. "Show me."

"What?"

"The haircut. Can't be that bad. Unless you're hiding a third ear or something."

I pulled off the hat. My uneven, butchered hair caught the light.

Lena studied it seriously. "Honestly? It's giving artsy. Embrace the chaos, Marcus."

Outside, lightning cracked the sky. A summer storm was rolling in.

"We should go inside," she said. "Want to help me restart the zombie movie? Jake's pick sucks."

"Yeah," I said, feeling something shift inside my chest. "Yeah, I do."

Maybe I wasn't a zombie after all. Maybe I was just waiting for my lightning moment.
