Poolside Lightning

The string of **cable** lights crisscrossed above the pool, casting everything in this warm, electric glow that made Friday nights feel like they could last forever. I leaned against the fence, nursing my soda, watching the play-by-play unfold like some awkward tennis match I didn't know how to join.

That's when I saw her—Maya—practically glowing by the **pool** edge, laughing at something Ethan said. Ethan, whose abs had abs. Ethan, who played **padel** like he was sponsored and probably used expensive conditioner. I was just the guy who got stuck in gym class when everyone actually *wanted* to be there.

But then came the moment. Maya turned toward me, and my stomach did that thing—like **lightning** struck somewhere in my chest. All static and spark and zero ground. She smiled at me. *At me.* And I froze, completely blanking on everything I'd practiced in the mirror for weeks.

"Hey!" she called out, wading through the shallow end. "Wanna play chicken with us?"

I opened my mouth to say something cool—maybe even smooth—but then Jordan decided to be helpful. "Dude," he stage-whispered across the noise, "you've got **spinach** in your teeth from the pizza!"

The entire pool area went quiet for like three seconds. Three. Eternal. Seconds.

Maya didn't laugh, though. She just splashed water at me, grinning. "Well? You coming in or what? Spinach teeth and all?"

And somehow—that somehow was the moment. Not when I finally looked cool. When I looked ridiculous and she didn't care.

I jumped in. The water was perfect. The cable lights danced on the surface. And for the first time all year, I stopped watching from the fence and started actually living in the electric, messy glow of it all.

Sometimes the moments that change you aren't the ones where you win. They're the ones where you dive in anyway—even with spinach in your teeth.
