Poolside Lightning

Maya sat by the edge of the pool, legs dangling in the cool water while everyone else splashed and laughed. She was sixteen, supposedly too old for pool parties, yet somehow always dragged along by her more social friends. The vitamin gummies she'd been taking daily sat in her pocket — her mom swore they'd help her "blossom" into a confident teenager. So far, nothing.

"You're thinking too loud again," said Jade, dropping beside her. Jade was the kind of person who made friends by existing — effortless charm, perfect hair, always laughing at the right moments.

"Just... thinking," Maya said, suddenly conscious of how she must look. Dark circles under her eyes, the wrong swimsuit, the wrong everything.

Jade grabbed Maya's hand, turned it palm up. "Let me see your future." She traced the lines with theatrical seriousness. "You know what palm readers always miss? The lightning."

"The lightning?"

"The moments that change everything in a flash. Like when you realize everyone's pretending."

Maya stared at her palm, at the water rippling around her ankles. "What if I'm just... bad at pretending?"

Jade squeezed her hand. "That's the best part. The vitamin isn't confidence — it's realizing nobody actually has it."

Across the pool, someone yelled "CANNONBALL" and water sprayed everywhere. Maya laughed, really laughed, as droplets hit her face. Lightning cracked the sky overhead, sudden and shocking, and for the first time all summer, she didn't worry about whether her swimsuit was right or her laugh was too loud.

"Jump in?" Jade asked.

Maya stood up, pulling her vitamin gummies from her pocket and tossing them onto her towel. "Yeah," she said. "I think I'm done taking those anyway."

She dove in, and the water embraced her like a long-overdue hello. Sometimes the best transformations aren't supplements or careful planning — they're just deciding, finally, to jump.
