Poolside Lightning

spylightningvitaminfriendpool

I was totally the spy at my own pool party.

Like, literally standing behind the snack table, watching everyone else have actual fun while I pretended to be deeply fascinated by a bag of chips. Jake was in the pool with the popular crew, his laugh cutting through the music like he owned the place. Meanwhile, I was just... existing. The ultimate wallflower, spying on a life I couldn't figure out how to enter.

"Hey, you gonna come in or what?"

I jumped like three feet. Mia stood there, dripping wet, her neon bikini somehow looking cool while I felt like a fraud in my one-piece. She was holding out a Vitamin Water like it was some kind of peace offering.

"I'm good," I mumbled, even though I was absolutely not good. My summer had been one giant exercise in awkward transitions and failed friend group pivots. "Just... enjoying the ambience."

Mia raised an eyebrow. "You've been spying on us for like twenty minutes. At least make it less obvious."

My face burned. "I wasn't—"

"It's cool." She dropped onto the lounge chair next to mine. "I used to do the same thing last year. Before I figured out that literally no one is actually watching you as much as you think they are."

A crack of thunder made us both jump. The sky had turned ominous while I'd been busy being a social detective.

"Storm's coming," someone yelled from the pool. "Everyone out!"

Lightning flashed across the sky, purple and terrifying. Everyone scrambled for the covered patio, but I couldn't move fast enough. The rain hit like a thousand tiny needles, cold and shocking. Then Mia grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the pool house.

"Come on, spy girl!"

We collapsed under the overhang, soaking wet, breathless. And suddenly I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. Mia was too, her hair plastered to her face, makeup everywhere. She looked nothing like the cool girl who'd intimidated me five minutes ago. She looked like... me.

"I'm Maya, by the way," she said between gasps. "And you definitely need to work on your undercover skills."

"I'm Chloe," I managed. "And I think I just failed my first mission."

She grinned. "Nah. You made a friend, didn't you?"

Lightning struck again, illuminating everything in stark white. And in that moment, spy mission failed or not, I felt like I'd finally cracked the code.
