Poolside Lightning

The humidity hugged Maya like an unwanted ex as she stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her iPhone like a lifeline. It was Tyler's end-of-school party, and everyone who was anyone was there. Including Tyler. Who was currently shirtless. And swimming. And smiling at everyone except her.

"Maya! Get in here!" screamed Chloe, her best friend since kindergarten, doing a cannonball that splashed half the partygoers. Maya shook her head, faking a smile. She'd rather die than let anyone see her in a swimsuit. Especially not Tyler.

Then it happened. Her iPhone slipped. Time moved in slow motion as it slid from her sweaty palm, hitting the concrete with a sickening crack before bouncing straight into the pool.

"NO!" she screamed, suddenly not caring about her insecurities as she dove in, fully dressed, to rescue her phone. She surfaced to laughter. But not mean laughter—genuine, surprised laughter. Including Tyler's.

"That was hardcore," Tyler said, swimming over. "You okay?"

Maya's heart hammered as she clutched her dripping, destroyed iPhone. "My mom is going to kill me."

"Let me see." Tyler took the phone, his fingers brushing hers. "I can fix this. My dad's a tech geek. I've been fixing phones since freshman year."

As if on cue, the sky cracked open. Lightning split the darkness, illuminating the pool in electric blue. Everyone screamed and scrambled toward the house.

"Come on!" Tyler grabbed Maya's hand. "Let's get inside before—"

Another lightning strike, closer this time. They ran, hands still clasped, bodies soaked and breathless. Inside, they ended up pressed together in the crowded hallway, shoulders touching, hearts racing.

"I'll fix your phone," Tyler whispered, his face inches from hers. "And next weekend, you should come over. My pool's heated. No clothes required."

He winked. Maya blushed. But for the first time all summer, it wasn't from embarrassment.

"I'd like that," she said.

Her iPhone might be dead, but something else had just sparked to life.
