Poolside Intelligence
I was supposed to be having the time of my life at Tyler's pool party, but instead I was doing what I do best: fading into the background while everyone else lived their best lives. The cool kids clustered around the deep end, their laughter echoing across the water like they were in some kind of exclusive commercial for teenage perfection.
That's when I spotted it — Tyler's little brother, creeping around the side of the house like a tiny spy on a mission. He was pressed against the siding, phone held low, obviously trying to capture something incriminating on video. The kid had potential.
"Nice technique," I whispered, sliding over to where he crouched behind a garden gnome. "But you're making too much noise with those shoes."
He jumped, then grinned. "I'm gathering intel. Emma and Jake were totally flirting behind the waterfall feature."
"Solid intel," I nodded solemnly. "But the real story's over by the pond."
We moved like a tactical unit, which meant we tried to look casual but were obviously concentrating too hard on walking normally. The garden pond had three goldfish swimming in lazy circles, completely unaware they were the most interesting things at this party. I'd been watching them for twenty minutes, mesmerized by how they just existed without caring who was watching or who was popular.
"They're living the dream," the kid said, dropping the spy act for a second. "Just swimming around, eating flakes, no drama."
"Exactly. No fake-smiling, no wondering if your swimsuit is last season, no pretending to understand Tiktok references."
Then it happened — someone started telling a story about "that time they saw a bear" while camping, and suddenly everyone was gathered around, hanging on every word. I saw my chance and bolted. No running away, just running toward the snack table where the shy girl from my English class was hovering by the chips.
"Bear stories, huh?" I said, grabbing a handful. "I bet you've got better ones."
She laughed, and for the first time all night, I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
