Poolside Goldfish

Maya stood by the edge of the pool, clutching her red solo cup like it was a lifeline. The water shimmered under the string lights, reflecting the chaos of what was supposed to be the party of the year. Everyone from school was there, even Jason, who was currently showing off his latest dive trick that wasn't nearly as impressive as he thought.

"You okay over there by yourself?" Maya jumped as her best friend Kira appeared beside her, holding a small goldfish bowl with a tiny orange fish swimming inside. "Party favor from the piñata. Can you believe someone thought live fish were a good idea?"

Maya laughed, some of the tension leaving her shoulders. "Only Jason would think that's cool. Speaking of, did you hear his story about almost getting into that elite art program?"

Kira rolled her eyes so hard Maya thought they might get stuck. "Complete and utter bull. My cousin's actually in that program, and she said they don't even accept applications until spring semester. He's just trying to impress Sarah."

The night air was thick with humidity and the smell of coconut sunscreen. A palm tree swayed gently near the pool gate, its fronds casting shadows that danced across the water. Maya watched the little goldfish in its bowl, swimming in endless circles, trapped in a glass prison while everyone around it pretended to have the time of their lives.

"You know," Maya said suddenly, "I think I'm more like that goldfish than any of these people. Just going around in circles, stuck in my own little world."

Kira set the bowl down on a nearby table and turned to face her friend. "Or maybe you're just finally realizing that this whole high school social scene is as shallow as that bowl. You're not trapped, Maya. You're just choosing to swim in the same patterns as everyone else."

The bass from the speakers thumped against Maya's chest, but for the first time all night, she felt like she could actually breathe. The water wasn't so scary when you realized you didn't have to dive in to make waves.
