Poolside Glow-Up

Maya's hair was supposed to be caramel balayage. Instead, it looked like a pumpkin explosion. The Instagram tutorial lied, and now she had exactly two hours before Tyler's pool party.

"You're still going, right?" Best friend Chloe texted. "Tyler's gonna be there."

Maya groaned at her reflection. Tyler, the swim team captain with the perfect smile and the hair that somehow always looked windblown in the best way. She'd been crushing on him since freshman orientation.

Her mom peeked in. "Honey, you look... bold."

"Bold isn't really the vibe I'm going for, Mom."

"Own it," her mom said. "Confidence is everything."

Easier said than done. At the party, Maya kept her hair in a messy bun, dodging pool splashes and flirting attempts from freshman boys who thought they had game. She sat in a Adirondack chair, scrolling through her phone, until Tyler sat beside her.

"Not swimming?" he asked, droplets pooling on his abs. Maya's brain short-circuited.

"Not really feeling it today."

"Bull," Tyler said. "I saw you at regionals. You're fast."

She blinked. "You remember that?"

"You beat my freestyle time by three seconds," he said, grinning. "I was salty about it for a week."

Maya's chest warmed. "Wait, really?"

"Cross my heart." He splashed her with pool water. "Come on. Your hair looks sick, by the way. Like, purposeful edgy."

Her bun had fallen loose. The pumpkin-orange waves cascaded down her shoulders.

"You're just saying that."

"I don't BS about hair." He stood up and held out a hand. "Race you to the other side?"

Maya took his hand, grinning. Suddenly the hair disaster felt like armor. She dove into the pool, surfacing with a splash that soaked Tyler perfectly.

"You're going down," he laughed.

"In your dreams, captain."
