Poolside Glow-Up

Maya stood in front of the bathroom mirror, examining her reflection like she was decoding a complex text. Summer break had started three days ago, and she'd decided this was it—this was the summer she'd finally become someone else. Someone cooler. Someone who had her life together.

"You're not gonna believe this," she whispered, practicing her casual voice. "I've basically been doing yoga every morning."

She'd started the day with a green smoothie. Her older sister, a college sophomore who definitely had her life together, had posted about them on her Instagram story. Maya had sneaked into the kitchen, trying to quietly blend together spinach, a banana, and some random juice. The result had looked like something from a sci-fi movie, but she'd drunk it anyway. That's what people with their lives together did. They consumed leafy greens willingly.

"Maya! Phone!" her mom called from downstairs.

"Got it!" Maya grabbed her phone, her heart doing that stupid fluttery thing it always did when she saw the group chat notification.

pool party @ jess's house tmrw 🏊‍♀️🌊 everyone's coming

A pool party. In July. The ultimate test. Maya smoothed her hair, then immediately stopped because she was being weird. She could do this. She'd been taking her vitamin gummies every morning (the adult ones, not the cartoon character ones). She was basically a different person already.

The next day, Maya arrived at Jess's house wearing her new swimsuit—the one she'd spent forty-five minutes deciding was "casual but confident." The backyard was already filled with people from school, most of whom she'd barely spoken to all year. Chlorine smell mixed with sunscreen and whatever cheap body spray everyone was wearing.

"Maya!" Jess waved her over. "You came!"

"Yeah, wouldn't miss it." Maya smiled, trying to look like someone who arrived at pool parties casually and not like she'd spent an hour overthinking her outfit.

She made it through the first hour fine. She even got into the pool, which she usually avoided because she hated how her makeup looked after. But New Maya was chill about things like that. New Maya didn't stress over smudged eyeliner.

Then someone brought out snacks, and Maya found herself sitting next to Liam, who she'd had a crush on since February, holding a paper plate with... spinach artichoke dip.

"Is that...?" Liam raised an eyebrow, half-smiling.

"Spinach," Maya said, feeling her face get hot. "It's actually good. Really healthy."

"Since when do you care about healthy stuff?" Liam asked, but he was smiling, not making fun of her.

Maya shrugged, surprised by her own honesty. "Since I decided I wanted to feel better this summer. I've been taking vitamins and everything. It's a whole thing."

Liam laughed, and Maya braced herself for the teasing. Instead, he said, "Actually, my mom's been trying to get me to eat more vegetables. Maybe I should try this stuff."

They sat there for twenty minutes, talking about nothing and everything, while the dip got cold and other people jumped in and out of the pool. Maya wasn't thinking about whether she looked cool or whether she was acting like someone else. She was just... hanging out. With Liam. Who kept smiling at her.

Later, when she got home, Maya caught her reflection in the mirror again. She still looked like Maya—same face, same hair that wouldn't quite do what she wanted. But she felt different. Not because of the spinach or the vitamins or whatever New Maya persona she'd tried on.

She felt different because maybe she didn't need to become someone else to be someone worth hanging out with. Maybe she could just be Maya, who was figuring stuff out, one awkward moment at a time.

"Hey Mom," she called downstairs. "Can we get more spinach? I'm making smoothies again tomorrow."

Some things about the glow-up were worth keeping.
