Poolside Frizzy
Maya stared at the bottle of biotin gummies on her bathroom counter. Her mom had bought them last week, convinced they would fix Maya's "problematic" hair—aka, the cascade of tight coils that defied every brush and product she'd ever tried.
"They're basically hair vitamins," her mom had said. "Just give it time."
Time was exactly what Maya didn't have. The pool party was in two hours.
Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up with pre-party hype. Everyone going. Including Jordan. Jordan with the perfect effortless waves and the smile that made Maya's stomach do that annoying flippy thing.
She applied three different hair creams. She considered wearing a swim cap, which would definitely not be casual and cool. She considered faking sick. She considered shaving her head.
Okay, maybe not that last one.
By the time she arrived at Chloe's house, her hair was already threatening to rebel against the hours of taming. The backyard was already loud with music and splashing. Maya hovered near the snack table, clutching a soda like a lifeline.
"Maya!" Chloe appeared, dripping wet. "You made it! You coming in?"
"Yeah, just..." Maya gestured vaguely at her hair. "Give me a sec."
Chloe frowned. "Your hair looks cute though?"
Maya snorted. "It's gonna look like a poodle exploded on my head once it hits water."
"Dude, literally no one cares." Chloe grabbed her hand. "Come on."
The pool shock was cold on Maya's toes. She watched Jordan surface near the diving board, slicking back wet hair, and something in her chest tightened. Everyone was so comfortable. So unbothered.
She waded in. The water felt amazing. The moment she dunked her head, she felt the coils loosen and expand, exactly like she'd predicted. When she came up for air, her hair was a halo around her face, bigger and wilder than before.
She heard laughter nearby.
Maya wiped her eyes, bracing herself, and saw Jordan watching her. Not laughing. Just... watching.
"Your hair," Jordan said, paddling closer. "It got bigger."
"Yeah, sorry." Maya started to sink deeper. "I should've—"
"No, it's sick." Jordan dunked underwater, then popped back up, shaking out their own now-tangled hair. "Mine turns into a rat's nest. Yours actually looks like you meant for it to do that."
Maya paused. "...really?"
"For real." Jordan grinned. "You look like a mermaid who knows what she's about."
The compliment landed so sideways that Maya almost missed it. A mermaid. Not a poodle. Not a mess. A mermaid who knew what she was about.
They spent the next hour swimming together, racing to the deep end, competing for worst dive. Maya's hair expanded into a magnificent cloud around her shoulders. Jordan's hair kept sticking up in weird tufts. Neither of them cared.
When Maya finally got home and stared in the mirror, her hair was still damp, still wild, still taking up way more space than she'd ever let it before.
She grabbed the biotin bottle from the counter and tossed it in the back of her medicine cabinet.
Some things didn't need fixing.
