Poolside Fox
Maya's iPhone vibrated for the third time in five minutes. Another Insta story from Tyler's party—more proof that everyone was living their best summer while she sat at home, anxiety doing backflips in her stomach.
"You going or not?" her mom asked from the kitchen. "The Chen invitation said pool party at 4. It's already 4:15."
"I'm going!" Maya grabbed her tote, stuffing in her spare bikini top and those gummy vitamin supplements her best friend swore would cure her awkwardness. As if.
The Chen house was already buzzing when she arrived. Tyler waved from the diving board, his million-watt smile lighting up the pool area. Then she saw—Reese. The girl everyone called "the fox" because she was slick, mysterious, and somehow always got what she wanted. Reese was draped across a lounge chair looking like she'd stepped out of a TikTok tutorial.
Maya's phone buzzed. A text from her cat-sitter: Miso knocked over the water bowl again. Typical. Miso, her grumpy orange tabby, had more game than she did.
"Maya! Finally!" Tyler materialized at her elbow, dripping pool water. "You made it. Reese was just saying she wanted to meet you."
Reese slid her sunglasses down. "So you're the one who drew that mural downtown? The fox with the spray paint?"
The fox with the—what?
"Um, thanks?" Maya managed.
"No, seriously." Reese sat up, actually interested. "I've been trying to find the artist. I run this youth art collective, and we're looking for someone to lead our fall workshop."
Tyler grinned. "Told you she's lowkey legendary."
For the first time all summer, Maya's anxiety did something different—it settled. Turns out she wasn't just the awkward girl with the gummy vitamins in her bag. She was the artist. The fox.
Her phone lit up with another cat-sitter update, but she ignored it. Some things could wait. Like, possibly, Tyler's text that just came through: 'So... u doing anything tomorrow?'
