Poolside Epiphany
The pool glittered like something you'd see on Instagram, not actually real, but I was standing at the edge in my oversized t-shirt anyway. Jordan's parties were legendary, which meant they were exactly the kind of social situation I'd normally avoid like a vegan at a barbecue.
"You gonna swim or just stand there looking like you're guarding the water?" Jordan yelled, already doing something that looked suspiciously like a TikTok dance on the diving board.
I hesitated. The vitamin D supplements on my nightstand weren't working their supposed magic on my mood, but that wasn't why I couldn't strip down to my swimsuit. Last time I'd worn it at Casey's pool, someone had made a comment about my back that I was still replaying at 3 AM.
Then I saw it – a flash of orange near the edge of the yard. A fox, sleek and unbothered, padding through the meticulously landscaped garden like it owned the place. It stopped, looked right at me, ears perked.
No one else noticed. They were too busy being teenagers in the most performed way possible. But the fox just stood there, totally itself, not giving a fox about who was watching.
"You good?" This was Maya, who I'd been lowkey crushing on since seventh grade. She was wearing an oversized jersey over her bikini, no makeup, hair everywhere. Looking incredible.
"Yeah," I said, something loosening in my chest. "Just thinking."
"About what?"
"How that fox has more confidence than everyone here combined."
Maya laughed, and it wasn't performative. "True. Want to get snacks? I'm starving and I refuse to eat whatever Jordan's mom made."
The bear of anxiety that had been sitting on my chest all afternoon suddenly lifted. I peeled off my t-shirt.
"Yeah," I said. "Let's do that."
We walked toward the house, the pool rippling behind us, the fox disappearing into the bushes. Some epiphanies are small. Sometimes they're just deciding that being yourself is better than being the person you think everyone expects you to be. Sometimes it's just wearing your swimsuit even when your hands are shaking a little.
And sometimes it's realizing that the coolest person at the party is the one who's not trying at all.
