Poolside Epiphany
The chlorine stung my eyes, but not as much as Jenna's text from last night. "We need to talk." Classic. The worst three words in the English language, hands down.
I was supposed to be lifeguarding at the community pool, but honestly, my head was barely above water. Literally and figuratively.
"You good, Marcus?" asked Tyler, my co-lifeguard. He was adjusting his sunglasses, looking annoyingly chill.
"Yeah, just vibing," I lied. Because what was I supposed to say? Hey, my crush is about to curve me, and I feel like I'm drowning in my own awkwardness?
That's when I saw it—a massive brown dog padding along the pool fence. Like, a huge beast, maybe a Newfoundland or something. It wasn't wearing a collar, just staring at the pool like it was contemplating a life-altering decision.
"Is that... a bear?" some girl whispered.
"No, it's a dog, you walnut," her friend fired back. They both dissolved into giggles.
But here's the thing about anxiety: it makes you do impulsive stuff. Before I knew it, I'd left my stand and was walking toward this massive creature. The dog's eyes met mine, and in that moment, something shifted. It wasn't just a stray dog anymore. It was like this animal was bearing witness to my entire messy existence.
I found myself sitting on the grass, my lifeguard whistle forgotten, pouring my heart out to a dog that probably just wanted water. "She's going to friend-zone me so hard," I whispered. "I'm such an idiot."
The dog nudged my hand with its wet nose, and I swear to god, it felt like understanding.
"Marcus!" Tyler yelled from his stand. "Your phone's been blowing up! Jenna's here!"
I scrambled up, heart racing, and there she was—standing at the pool entrance, looking nervous as hell. Not to dump me. To ask if I wanted to hang out after my shift.
Sometimes the scariest moments aren't the ones that break you. They're the ones that build you. And sometimes, you just need a random dog and a chlorinated pool to figure that out.
