Poolside Epiphanies

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The sophomore year kickback was in full swing—chlorine mixed with cheap body spray, laughter everywhere, and Tyler from chemistry actually shirtless, which she'd been lowkey dreaming about since August.

"You coming in or what?" Jordan called from the water, splashing water that somehow defied physics.

"In a minute," Maya lied. Her swimsuit felt wrong, like she'd picked it from the reject pile at Target. Everyone else looked effortless.

She retreated to the snack table, where someone's mom had gone full Pinterest with tropical fruit. She grabbed a slice of papaya, hesitated, then took a bite. Weirdly good—like if an apricot and a mango had a glow-up.

"That's actually decent," said a voice beside her. Riley. The girl who'd cut her hair into a pixie the first week of school and given zero cares about anyone's opinion. "My mom says it's packed with vitamin C. Not that I'm tracking my macros or anything."

Maya swallowed. "Yeah. Just... trying new stuff."

Riley's eyes crinkled. "Same. This time last year? I wouldn't have been caught dead at a pool party. Too many people, too much skin." She gestured to her upper arm, where a tiny sphinx tattoo peeked out. "Got this freshman year. Reminds me to riddle myself less about what other people think."

That's when the golden retriever escaped from somewhere and barreled toward them, shaking pool water like a furry sprinkler system. Maya jumped back, laughing in spite of herself as the dog—shepherd mix, actually—circled them, tail going nuclear.

"That's Buster," Riley said, scratching behind his ears like she'd known him forever. "Chillest dog ever. Also the reason half these people are wet."

Buster bounded toward Tyler, who was now leaning against the pool edge, trying to look casual. The dog shook again. Tyler's perfect hair: destroyed. Maya almost snorted.

"Life's better when you just... go for it," Riley said, watching the chaos unfold. "Papaya. Tattoos. Pool parties with dogs." She shrugged. "Whatever."

Maya looked at the water, where Jordan was still beckoning. Tyler was laughing, wiping water from his face, somehow hotter for it. Riley stood there like she owned the place, despite the dog-induced mayhem.

The papaya had been weird but good. New things could be like that.

Maya dropped her phone on the snack table. "Bet you I can do a cannonball bigger than Jordan's."

Riley's grin was all the answer she needed. The pool was cold, the splash was epic, and for the first time all year, Maya didn't care who was watching.
