Poolside Courage
Marcus tugged the brim of his dad's old trucker **hat** lower, trying to disappear into it. The stupid thing smelled like his dad's garage—oil and old wood—but wearing it made him feel like maybe, just maybe, he wouldn't completely embarrass himself at Jen's pool party.
"Yo, Marcus! You gonna swim or just stand there looking like you're guarding the dip?" That was Tyler. Everyone called him **The Bull** behind his back, which he somehow took as a compliment. Tyler was everything Marcus wasn't: loud, confident, had that effortless swagger that made everyone laugh at his jokes even when they were kind of mean.
The pool reflected perfect summer sky, blue and inviting, but Marcus's stomach did nervous flip-flops. He'd forgotten his trunks at home like an idiot, so he was stuck in basketball shorts that would definitely look ridiculous soaked.
"I'm good," Marcus mumbled, but Jen was already there, grinning.
"Don't be weird, Marcus. Everyone's doing cannonballs!"
Before he could protest, Tyler shoved him—playfully, but hard enough. Marcus stumbled, his hat flying off, and SPLASH.
The water was cold. Under the surface, everything muffled and quiet. For a second, he just let himself sink, wishing he could stay down there forever. But then he heard it—muffled laughter from above.
Something snapped. Not angry, just… done. Marcus pushed off the bottom, burst up gasping, and grabbed his floating hat from the water. Tyler was doubled over laughing, but Marcus just wrung out his hat, slapped it back on his soaking hair, and shouted:
"Your turn, Bull!"
And he splashed water right in Tyler's face.
Silence for exactly one second. Then Tyler was laughing too—not his mean laugh, but a real one. "Okay, okay, I deserved that!"
Later, floating on his back under the summer sun, hat resting on his chest, Marcus realized something: The Bull wasn't so scary once you got wet. And maybe that was the thing about courage—it wasn't about not being scared. It was about jumping in anyway.
