Poolside Conspiracy
Maya stood at the edge of the pool clutching her iPhone like a lifeline. The popular kids were splashing around, laughing like they'd been best friends forever, while she felt like she'd accidentally crashed someone else's movie.
"Hey, you coming in?" Jake called from the water. Jake. The Jake she'd been lowkey stalking on Instagram since seventh grade. Now he was five feet away, shirtless, with droplets running down his abs that made her brain malfunction.
"Uh, yeah! Just, you know..." She waved her phone vaguely. "Waiting for it to charge."
Total lie. Her battery was at 87%. But if she jumped in now, she'd have to actually talk to people, and her social battery was already critical.
Her phone buzzed. A text from Chloe, her actual best friend: *U R SPIYING ON HIM AGAIN OMG*
*Am not,* Maya typed back, then deleted it. *Maybe a little. OK a lot. Whatever. Don't judge me.*
Then disaster struck. She'd been balancing her phone on the pool edge, plugged into someone's outdoor outlet with a sketchy-looking cable she'd found in the garage. Her elbow bumped it. Slow-mo horror movie style, the iPhone tipped toward the water.
"NO!" She lunged for it, caught it mid-air, but the momentum carried her forward. She tripped over her own flip-flops and did the most ungraceful belly flop in history, slamming into the pool with a splash that displaced half the water.
Silence. Then everyone was laughing.
But not mean laughing. Jake was literally cracking up. "That was legendary!" He swam over. "You okay?"
Maya surfaced, sputtering, hair plastered to her face, feeling like the biggest dork on planet Earth. "Yeah. Super graceful."
"That was honestly amazing," Jake said, grinning. "I'm Jake, by the way."
"Maya." She pushed her hair back, realizing everyone was still smiling, not at her expense but with her. The night wasn't ruined. It was just... beginning.
Her phone bobbed near the edge, safely dry. The cable dangled uselessly from the outlet. But for the first time all night, Maya wasn't thinking about taking pictures or spying from the sidelines.
"Race you to the other side?" Jake challenged.
Maya grinned. "You're going down."
