Poolside Confidence

Maya's summer job at the pool snack stand was supposed to be chill—just slinging soft pretzels and vibe-checking until September. But then came The Hair Incident. Her supposed stylist-turned-friend Jasmine had turned her waist-length box braids into what Maya's little brother called 'the awkward pyramid'—short, uneven layers that defied gravity and logic. Now she was supposed to just, what? Serve snacks looking like a failed science experiment?

'I'm literally spiraling,' she texted her bestie Kai. 'You can't spy on me from the concession stand. I need moral support.'

'Nah, I got swim practice,' Kai replied. 'You got this. Just own the pyramid, sis.'

Easy for him to say. Kai wasn't the one whose hair looked like it had been cut by someone operating on three hours of sleep and zero experience.

Then Tyler showed up. Tyler, whose messy dark curls fell perfectly across his forehead. Tyler, who'd smiled at her in the hallway last week. Tyler, who now stood by the pool's edge, watching her arrange nacho cheese cups into a neat pyramid because her anxiety made her weirdly organized.

'Hey,' he said, sliding up to the counter. 'Nice setup.' He gestured to the cheese cups.

'Thanks.' Maya's voice squeaked. Great. Just great.

'I like your hair,' he said, and her internal monologue went from spiraling to full panic mode. 'It's different. Bold.'

'That's one word for it,' Maya muttered.

Tyler's phone buzzed. 'My friends are bugging me to get back to our game of, uh, spy tag in the water. You wanna watch?' He actually looked nervous, like she might say no.

'Spy tag?'

'It's dumb. We pretend to be secret agents underwater.' He shrugged. 'But it's more fun with an audience.'

Maya looked at her cheese cup pyramid, at Tyler's hopeful expression, at the glittering pool water where a group of guys were dramatically diving and surfacing like they were in some low-budget action movie. She thought about the pyramid on her head, the one she'd been hiding under hats and hoods for days.

'Yeah,' she said. 'Why not.'

She stepped around the counter, pyramid hair catching the sunlight. Tyler's grin was worth it. And as she watched him dive back into the water, surfacing with a triumphant splash, Maya realized her hair wasn't the only thing that could be bold.

Maybe this summer wouldn't be so bad after all.
