Poolside Confessions

The August heat pressed against the pool deck like a physical weight. Maya clutched her iPhone to her chest, heart racing as she watched Liam emerge from the water, droplets cascading down his abs like he was in a slow-motion movie scene. She'd been crushing on him since freshman year, and tonight—Sam's end-of-summer pool party—was finally the night she'd make her move.

"Maya!" Sam called from the diving board. "Truth or dare?"

"Truth," she squeaked.

"Who's your crush?"

The pool went silent. Everyone's eyes locked on her. Even the guys playing chicken fights paused. Her face burned hotter than the asphalt.

"I... I have this stuffed bear I can't sleep without," she blurted. "His name is Mr. Cuddlesworth and he's wearing a tiny baseball jersey."

Dead silence. Then Liam burst out laughing, and Maya wanted to dissolve into the pool water.

"That's actually adorable," he said, swimming to the edge where she sat. "I still have my childhood baseball glove under my bed. My dad gave it to me before... yeah."

The air shifted. Everyone knew Liam's dad had moved out last spring. Suddenly, Mr. Cuddlesworth didn't feel so embarrassing.

"Show me the bear," Liam said, pulling himself up to sit beside her. "I'll show you my glove."

Maya's thumb hovered over her iPhone screen, ready to document this moment. Instead, she pocketed it and grinned.

"Only if you admit Mr. Cuddlesworth has better fashion sense than you."

"Challenge accepted," Liam laughed, water dripping from his hair onto her shoulder. "But first, let me see this bear with his tiny baseball jersey."

The pool lights flickered on as the sun dipped below the horizon. Whatever happened next—with the bear, with the baseball jersey, with Liam—she'd handle it. Mr. Cuddlesworth and his tiny baseball uniform could wait. Because right now, sitting poolside with Liam laughing beside her, Maya felt like she was exactly where she was meant to be.
