Poolside Confessions

The cable had been cut for three days when Sarah finally climbed out of bed and found herself at the complex pool, floating on her back at 2 AM. The water was cold enough to shock her into feeling something again.

She thought about Marco—her best friend, her boss, the man who'd kissed her at the Christmas party and never acknowledged it since. He'd given her that ridiculous hat last month, a wide-brimmed thing she'd worn exactly once, the day before everything fell apart.

"You're too trusting," he'd said, adjusting the brim. "Like a fox in a henhouse, you have no idea how vulnerable you are."

She'd laughed. They'd been friends for seven years, since she started as his junior associate. He'd mentored her, promoted her, defended her when the partners questioned her promotion. And then he'd sabotaged her biggest deal, forwarded her confidential notes to a competitor, watched her career crumble while he collected the finder's fee.

The pool lights flickered underwater, casting rippling shadows across the concrete. Sarah floated deeper into the center, letting herself sink until her toes brushed the bottom. The silence was absolute.

Her phone buzzed on the deck—Marco calling, probably drunk again. His fifth message this week. "I can explain," he'd said yesterday, voice cracking. "It wasn't supposed to go that far."

She surfaced, gasping. The night air smelled of chlorine and distant exhaust fumes. Somewhere in the darkness, a fox screamed—a sharp, high cry that sounded almost human.

Sarah pulled herself from the pool, water streaming from her skin like she was shedding something essential. She picked up her phone, blocked Marco's number for the third time, and walked toward her apartment without looking back.

Tomorrow she'd call a lawyer. Tonight, she'd just breathe.
