Poolside Betrayal

poolpalmcabledogspy

Mara sat by the hotel pool at midnight, the water's surface reflecting palm fronds against a sickly yellow moon. She'd been waiting two hours for Julian, who'd claimed a late-night meeting with investors. Her hand trembled as she scrolled through his leaked emails on her phone—documents forwarded to a competitor she knew all too well.

Their firm's cable division had been hemorrhaging patents for months. She'd suspected a mole, imagined some faceless IT guy or junior analyst with gambling debts. Never Julian. Never the man who'd held her sweating palm through her mother's funeral, who'd promised forever between half-whispered conversations about starting over somewhere without corporate secrets.

A dog barked somewhere in the distance as the hotel's automatic doors slid open. Julian walked out, loosening his tie, looking exhausted. He spotted her and froze.

"You're up late," he said, voice flat.

"Mara, I—" He stopped, his gaze dropping to her phone, to the glowing email chain with timestamps that matched every stolen patent.

"You're the spy," she said, the word tasting like ash. "The mole. All those nights you were 'working late'—"

"They threatened everything," he said quietly. "Blackmailed me about my brother's gambling debts. I didn't have a—"

"You had me." She stood, her chair scraping against concrete. "You could have told me. We could have figured it out."

"And risked you going down with me?"

"So you sold out my division instead?"

"I was protecting us!"

"No." She walked past him toward the lobby. "You were protecting yourself. Like you always do."

The pool's fountain burbled somewhere behind her. Palm shadows danced across his face as she left him standing there in the moonlight, the weight of eleven years of trust finally collapsing under the pressure of his lies.
