Poolside Betrayal

orangepoolspywater

The orange slice floated in Maya's drink, slowly disintegrating like her marriage. She stood by the hotel pool, nursing her vodka tonic, watching David laugh with that woman from accounting—the one with too much mascara and not enough boundaries.

Maya wasn't proud of it, but she'd become a spy in her own life. Checking his phone while he showered. Tracking his location through that app he'd forgotten to disable. Pathetic.

The party continued around her. Coworkers drunk on quarterly bonuses and cheap champagne. Maya just felt drunk on exhaustion. Three years of therapy, two affairs (his, not hers), and now this—corporate retreat where everyone pretended their lives weren't falling apart.

She'd seen them earlier. David and the mascara woman, their heads bent together by the hotel bar. His hand on her back. The way she laughed at something he said, touching his arm.

Maya tossed her drink into the pool, watching the water ripple outward. A small disruption in an otherwise perfect evening.

"You okay?"

She turned. Marcus from IT. The one person who never asked questions.

"Just thinking about leaving," she said.

"The party or David?"

Maya laughed, surprising herself. "Both. Either. I don't know anymore."

Marcus nodded. "The water's cold this time of year. If you're going to jump, you should know."

"Who said anything about jumping?"

"Nobody. But you've been staring at that pool for an hour like it holds answers."

Maybe it did. Maybe the answers were in the water, in the way it reflected nothing and everything at once. In the way it held people up until it decided not to.

"I'll be fine," she said, but it sounded like a question.

"Sure you will." Marcus walked away, leaving her alone with the orange slice finally dissolved to nothing.

Maya took off her shoes, dipped her feet in the pool. The water was freezing, exactly as promised. She watched David across the deck, still laughing, still performing, still completely unaware that his wife was learning how to breathe underwater.

The spy in her died that night. Something else was born instead.
