Poolside at Sunset

Elena sat by the club pool, watching Marcus play padel on court three. His iPhone buzzed on the table beside her—again. She didn't pick up. She knew who it was.

They'd been running from the truth for six months now, ever since she found those messages. The digital affair had metastasized into something real, something physical. Still, they kept playing their parts: Sunday padel matches, club lunches, the facade of a perfect marriage.

"Your form's improving," she'd told him earlier, noticing the spinach leaf caught between his teeth. She hadn't mentioned it. Some things had become too intimate to point out anymore.

Now his partner served. Marcus missed the return, cursing under his breath. His eyes darted toward her, then quickly away. The pool water lapped softly against the tiles, hypnotic and blue.

Elena thought about the first time they'd met here, five years ago. He'd been handsome and charming, buying her a drink from the cabana bar. They'd ended up in this same pool at midnight, clothes optional, laughing like they invented joy. Now she watched him from a distance, calculating the emotional cost of leaving versus the price of staying.

His phone lit up with a notification: "Running 15 min late ;)"

She stood up slowly, gathering her towel. The padel match would end soon. He'd come over, smelling of sweat and sunscreen, making excuses about his phone being on silent. She'd nod, pouring more wine, pretending to believe him.

Some marriages end in explosions. Others drown in shallow water, inch by inch, until you're simply too tired to keep swimming.

Elena walked toward the exit without looking back. The club groundskeeper was raking the courts, the rhythmic scratching sound like time running out. She'd leave her key at the front desk. Let him explain that.
