Pool Pyramid Chaos

My hair was already a disaster when I walked into Jessica's pool party, and naturally, that's when everything went sideways. I'd spent forty-five minutes trying to look effortless, which is honestly the most exhausting thing about being fifteen.

The social pyramid at this party was painfully obvious: Jessica and her squad at the top in their perfectly coordinated swimsuits, everyone else scattered in the middle, and then there was me, trying to disappear near the snack table while clutching a cup of lukewarm punch like it was my life force.

"Hey, watch out!" someone yelled, and suddenly I was being tackled into the pool. Fully clothed. Phone in pocket. Because apparently the universe has a personal vendetta against my dignity.

As I surfaced, sputtering and dramatically ruined, I noticed Tyler's dog — this chaos demon of a golden retriever named Brody — was racing around the pool edge with what looked like a stuffed bear in his mouth. But it wasn't a stuffed bear.

"NO!" Tyler screamed, scrambling after him. "That's not a bear! That's my mom's ancient Egyptian artifact replica thing!"

The dog launched himself into the pool, bear/relic clamped in his jaws, creating a splash that rivals the ones in movies. The object bobbed to the surface, and I swear I heard dramatic music start playing in my head.

"That's a pyramid pyramid," Jessica said, appearing at the pool edge, looking mildly impressed despite herself. "Like, an actual pyramid shape thing."

Tyler jumped in, clothes and all, and we all ended up in this ridiculous cluster in the shallow end, treading water while surrounded by floating chips, one very pleased dog, and what turned out to be a paperweight pyramid from Tyler's mom's Egypt phase.

My hair was wrecked. My phone was dead. I was dripping wet in oversized clothes while everyone stared. But somehow, I ended up sitting on the pool edge with Jessica and Tyler, laughing so hard I couldn't breathe.

Sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. And sometimes it takes getting pushed into a pool and nearly destroying an artifact to figure out that the social pyramid is just as weird and random as everything else.
