Pool Party Truth or Drown
The chlorine stung Maya's eyes as she surfaced from the **water**, gasping. Jake's house party was already legendary status, and she'd only arrived twenty minutes ago. Her best friend Priya mouthed 'YOU GOOD?' from the edge of the pool, but Maya waved her off like it was nothing.
Truth was, Maya was lowkey freaking out. She'd spent forty-five minutes flat-ironing her **hair** that morning, determined to finally make a move on Jake after months of Instagram-stalking his posts from a distance. But then Brianna showed up – Brianna, with her perfect beach waves and effortless cool vibe – and suddenly Maya's game plan felt totally mid.
"Maya! Truth or dare?" someone shouted.
She froze. Jake was watching. Brianna was watching. Literally everyone was watching.
"Dare," she said, maybe too quickly.
"Jump in the pool with all your clothes on!" Brianna called out, giggling with that mean-girl energy she'd been perfecting since seventh grade.
Maya's pulse skyrocketed. Her phone was in her pocket. Her outfit was from Urban Outfitters and definitely not pool-approved. But Priya was already chanting her name, and Jake was grinning like this was the most entertaining thing that had happened all night.
So Maya jumped.
The **water** swallowed her whole – phone, outfit, carefully curated aesthetic, everything. When she broke the surface, sputtering and drenched, the silence lasted maybe two seconds before everyone went wild.
Jake actually high-fived her. "You're actually insane," he said, but he was smiling. Not the polite Instagram-smile, but like, really smiling.
Later, wrapped in a towel while her phone charged in the kitchen, Maya caught her reflection in the microwave door. Her **hair** was frizzy and unmanageable, running down her back in natural waves she'd been fighting since elementary school. Brianna's perfect hair sat sleek and untouched nearby.
But Jake slid into the seat beside her. "You want to finish our Fortnite match? My room's upstairs."
Maya glanced at Brianna, still posed perfectly by the pool, then back at Jake. Her hair was a mess, her phone was waterlogged, and she was wearing someone's oversized gym clothes.
"Sure," she said. "But I'm absolutely destroying you this time."
Some nights, the perfect moment wasn't the one you planned for. Sometimes it was the one where you jumped in headfirst, literally, and figured out the rest later.
