Pool Party Truth or Dare
Maya smoothed her hair for the hundredth time, checking her reflection in the bathroom mirror. The chlorine would definitely wreck the curls she'd spent two hours perfecting, but Jake would be at Tyler's pool party tonight. Her best friend Chloe had been strategic spy-level stalking Jake's Instagram stories all week, confirming he'd definitely be there. "His stories have been low-key thirsty for this party," Chloe had texted earlier. "He's obviously planning to make a move on someone."
The backyard was already packed when Maya arrived, smelling like coconut sunscreen and teenage desperation. She spotted Jake immediately near the snack table, laughing at something Tyler said. Her palms started sweating—like, actually dripping. Why did nervousness always manifest so grossly?
"Maya!" Chloe grabbed her arm, practically vibrating. "Jake keeps looking at you. Not even kidding."
"You're literally delusional," Maya said, though her heart did that stupid flutter thing.
Someone shouted "Truth or Dare!" and suddenly they were all sitting in a circle on the concrete, knees pulled up, the pool water sloshing against the edge. Jake was two people away, close enough that Maya could smell his cologne. Was that sandalwood? Who wore sandalwood to a pool party?
"Maya, truth or dare?" Tyler grinned wickedly. Everyone knew what that meant.
"Dare," she said, trying to sound chill.
"I dare you to kiss Jake."
The collective gasp was literally cartoonish. Maya's face burned so hot she felt like she might spontaneously combust. Jake raised an eyebrow, that stupid half-smile playing at the corner of his mouth. And then—
CRACK. Lightning split the sky, so bright it left spots in Maya's vision. A massive thunderclap followed immediately.
"Inside, NOW!" Tyler's mom shouted from the back door.
Everyone scrambled up, grabbing towels and phones, the sudden downpour already soaking through everything. Maya was halfway across the lawn when Jake caught her arm, his palm warm against her skin.
"Hey," he said, rain plastering his dark hair to his forehead. "Saved by the weather, I guess?"
"Yeah," Maya managed, heart hammering harder than before. "Guess so."
"Or," Jake stepped closer, "we could continue that dare?"
Maya looked up at him through the rain, water streaming down both their faces, and thought sometimes storms were exactly what you needed.
