Pool Party Sphinx

My hair was already plotting against me by the time we pulled up to Jason's lake house. Mom had spent forty minutes flat-ironing it that morning, but the humidity clearly had other plans. Great. Just what I needed—looking like a frizz ball while trying to impress the guy I'd been crushing on since seventh period English.

"You good?" Zara asked, nudging me with her elbow as we walked toward the backyard where thumping bass echoed. "You look like you're about to face a sphinx's riddle or something."

"I'm fine," I lied, adjusting my swimsuit straps. "Just peachy."

The pool party was already in full swing—pretty much everyone from school was there, splashing around in the crystal-blue water. Jason. Emily. That crew. I hovered near the snack table, nursing a lukewarm soda like it was my job.

Then Jason spotted me. "Maya! You made it!" He waved me over, grinning like I was actually someone worth noticing. "We're about to play chicken fight. You down?"

My stomach did that stupid fluttery thing. "Uh, sure?"

"Here." He gestured to the pool. "You can be on my team."

I climbed onto his shoulders in the water, trying to act like this wasn't basically the highlight of my entire high school existence. But when Emily's team charged at us, Jason slipped. I tumbled backward into the pool with an epic splash, resurfacing to everyone cracking up.

My hair. My meticulously straightened hair was now a Medusa situation plastered across my face.

I wanted to disappear. Like, actually bear with me here—I would've rather faced every one of those sphinx riddles from mythology class than deal with this mortification.

But then Jason reached out a hand, still laughing but not mean-laughing. "You okay? That was actually legendary."

I took his hand, water dripping everywhere. "Yeah. I'm good."

"Your hair," Zara called from the side, "is giving mermaid vibes. Work it."

So I did. I flipped my wet hair back, finally accepting that maybe—just maybe—imperfect was okay. Jason didn't seem to mind. And neither did I.
