Pool Party Sphinx
Maya stood by the snack table, clutching a neon orange Vitaminwater like it was her lifeline. She'd been at Jake's pool party for twenty minutes and already felt like a zombie—dead inside, shambling around, no idea what she was supposed to be doing. Everyone else seemed so comfortable in their skin, laughing and splashing in the pool like this was exactly where they belonged.
Then she saw her.
The girl sat on the diving board, legs crossed, watching everything with these intense eyes like she was some kind of sphinx guarding ancient secrets. People seemed to gravitate toward her but keep their distance at the same time. She wasn't swimming—just observing.
"That's Luna," someone whispered behind Maya. "She transferred here from California."
Maya's cat Oreo would've loved Luna—same judging stare, same I-know-something-you-don't vibe. Not that Maya was going to talk to her. She was barely surviving normal social interactions, let alone the sphinx-level mysteries of cool new girls.
Except Luna was walking over, her wet hair dripping tiny puddles on the concrete. "You drinking that vitamin water for the health benefits or because you're nervous?"
Maya's face burned. "Both?"
Luna laughed, and it sounded surprisingly real. "I'm Luna. I'm nervous too. Everyone here knows each other from kindergarten, and I'm just the California weirdo who doesn't understand half the inside jokes."
"You looked so confident sitting up there," Maya said.
"That's called panic paralysis. You looked confident too—clutching that drink like it's your only friend."
Maya actually laughed. "I'm Maya. And yeah, social skills aren't exactly my strong suit."
"Wanna go swimming?" Luna asked. "If we're both going to be awkward, might as well be awkward in the pool."
For the first time all night, Maya didn't feel like a zombie anymore. She felt like maybe, just maybe, she'd found someone who got it—someone who could turn a pool party from terrifying to tolerable.
"Yes," Maya said, setting down her vitamin water. "Absolutely."
