Pool Party Secrets
Maya gripped her phone like a lifeline, screen brightness dialed down to nothing. She wasn't technically stalking, but watching Chloe's Instagram stories from last weekend's party felt suspiciously like playing **spy**. The photos showed Chloe—her former best friend—laughing with the girls who'd dropped Maya the second high school started.
The **pool** sparkled behind them, its blue surface distorted by party lights and teenage hands dangling into the water. Maya had spent all morning debating whether to even show up today. Her stomach did that familiar flip-flop thing, like she was back in middle school wondering if she'd ever grow into her awkward elbows.
"You coming in or what?" Jaden called from the deep end. He was the only person who'd stayed real through the friend group implosion. Not that Maya would admit it, but his loose gray swim trunks and the way he'd started filling out vertically over the summer had become... distracting.
"Maybe later," Maya muttered, clutching her towel like a shield. Her childhood **bear**—this beat-up caramel stuffed animal named Barnaby that still sat on her bed at home—would've told her to suck it up and jump in. Barnaby had seen her through way worse than a pool party.
That's when she noticed Chloe approaching, channeling her inner **fox** with that cunning little smile that used to signal they were about to pull something ridiculous. Usually it meant sneaking out or flirting with upperclassmen or convincing Maya to do something she'd regret later.
"Hey," Chloe said, sliding onto the lounge chair beside her. "Remember when we tried to dye your hair that one color?" She laughed, but it was soft, almost nostalgic.
Maya's chest tightened. "Blue. It turned out green. I looked like a mermaid who'd been through a toxic waste spill."
"Exactly." Chloe bumped her shoulder, just like old times. "I missed you, you know."
The words hit harder than Maya expected. She'd built up this whole narrative in her head about Chloe being the villain, but what if they'd both just been stupid and fifteen and figuring it out?
"I missed you too," Maya said finally. "But you were kind of a jerk."
"I know." Chloe stood up, extending her hand. "Come on. Jaden's doing that thing where he pretends to be a shark again. If we don't get in there, he'll never shut up about it."
Maya hesitated, then dropped her phone on the towel. Barnaby would be proud.
"Fine," she said, taking Chloe's hand. "But if my hair turns green again, you're paying for the fix."
Chloe's grin was genuine this time. "Deal. Now let's go before Jaden drowns trying to be impressive."
They cannonballed in together, and for the first time in months, Maya didn't feel like she was spying on her own life from the outside.
