Pool Party Riddles

Maya's palms were literally sweating as she stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her phone like it was her only lifeline. The sophomore pool party. Everyone who was anyone was there, including Jordan, who had been giving her mixed signals all semester.

"You gonna swim or what?" called Kayla, who was already doing laps across the pool like she owned it.

Maya forced a laugh. "Just warming up."

Truth was, she felt like she was drowning in social anxiety, and she hadn't even touched the water yet. Everyone else seemed so comfortable in their skin, so effortlessly cool, while she was over here calculating every move like it was some complex algorithm she couldn't solve.

Then she saw Jordan sitting on the edge of the pool, dangling their feet in the water. Jordan. The ultimate sphinx of the sophomore class – mysterious, unreadable, impossibly intriguing. Half the time Maya couldn't tell if Jordan was flirting with her or just being polite. It was like trying to decode ancient hieroglyphics without a Rosetta Stone.

Maya took a deep breath and slid into the pool. The water shocked her skin, cool and refreshing, and suddenly she was moving – actually swimming – and it felt like some kind of breakthrough. Like maybe she could do this. Navigate the social waters, figure out the riddles of teenage romance, become someone who didn't overthink everything.

She surfaced near Jordan, water dripping from her hair.

"Hey," Jordan said, smiling. That mysterious sphinx smile that made her stomach flip.

"Hey," Maya said back, her heart racing. And for the first time all night, she wasn't thinking about what to say next. She was just there, present, swimming in the moment, palms no longer sweaty, finally ready to solve whatever riddles this year threw at her.

Maybe being a teenager was all about embracing the unknown. Learning to swim when you wanted to sink. Reading the sphinx's riddles and realizing the answer was always being yourself.

"Race you to the other side?" Jordan asked.

Maya grinned. "You're on."
