Pool Party Riddle
The backyard transformed into something straight out of a movie when Maya's parents opened their pool for the summer kickoff. Water shimmered under the fairy lights strung between trees, and the air smelled like chlorine and cheap body spray.
I stood near the snack table, nursing a lukewarm soda like it was my lifeline. Tyler—the guy I'd been crushing on since seventh grade—was by the pool edge, surrounded by his crew. He had this way of holding court, like a bull in a china shop who didn't realize he was breaking everything.
"You're staring again," whispered Kayla, my best friend since diapers. She flicked my arm. "Just go talk to him."
"Yeah, right. I can barely form words around him. It's pathetic."
Maya's golden retriever, Cooper, bounded over, splashing water everywhere as he shook himself dry. Everyone laughed. Even Tyler. Even me.
That's when Chloe appeared. The new girl. She moved like a cat—silent, graceful, like she knew secrets the rest of us didn't. She stood next to Tyler, saying something I couldn't hear. He laughed, and something twisted in my chest.
The night felt like a riddle I couldn't solve. A modern sphinx without the wings, demanding answers I wasn't ready to give. Who was I supposed to be? The girl who watched from the sidelines, or someone who actually participated in her own life?
Cooper chose that moment to shake off directly onto Tyler's shirt.
"Nice, Cooper," someone called out. "Real smooth."
Tyler laughed, wiping water from his face. His eyes found mine across the pool. For a second, everything else fell away.
"Hey," he said, walking over. Water dripped from his hair. "You've been over there all night. Everything good?"
I opened my mouth, then closed it. Then decided to just let the words fall out.
"Yeah," I said. "I'm good. Just... thinking."
"About what?"
"About how sometimes you've got to jump in the pool instead of standing around wondering if the water's too cold."
He smiled. Something genuine.
"Yeah," he said. "Yeah, exactly."
