Pool Party Pyramid
Marcus stood at the edge of the pool, clutching his plastic bag like it contained the crown jewels. Inside, a single goldfish— won from that rigged carnival game last night—swam in tiny, panicked circles. His first pet, and he'd named it Nacho because he was snack-size.
The sophomore class social pyramid loomed over everything. At the top? Tyler's crew, shirtless and confident, owning the shallow end like they paid mortgage on it. Tyler, whose nickname was "The Bull" for his野蛮 tendency to charge through conversations, parties, and apparently, pool noodle fights.
"Yo, Marcus!" Tyler barked, splashing water toward his feet. "You gonna stand there all day or jump?"
His friends laughed. That tight, pack-laugh that made Marcus's stomach twist.
"Maybe," Marcus mumbled, but Nacho's bag burned in his hand. His stupid, tiny goldfish had better courage than he did. Last summer he wouldn't have even shown up to Tyler's legendary July 4th bash. Last summer he was invisible. This summer, he was... here. Still terrified, but present.
"Whatever," Tyler said, already losing interest like—well, like a goldfish. "Hey, who wants to play chicken?"
Marcus's phone buzzed. His group chat: "dude r u gonna chicken out again lol"
Something snapped in his chest. Not bravery, just—tiredness. Tired of being the person who stood at edges. He slid his phone onto his towel. Gripped the goldfish bag. And jumped.
The shock of cold swallowed him. When he broke the surface, sputtering, Tyler was watching.
"Finally," Tyler said, but weirdly, he sounded almost impressed. "Grab a noodle. We need a fourth."
Marcus floated there, clutching his bag, Nacho swimming confused circles beside him. The pyramid hadn't changed, but somehow, he'd climbed up one rung. Small, but not nothing.
"Nah," Marcus said, surprising himself. "I'm good. Just gonna float."
And he did. Pool party of the century, social pyramid be damned, just him and his goldfish, finally in the deep end.
