Pool Party Panic
My phone buzzed with the text I'd been waiting for since seventh grade: pool party at Jake's house. Friday night. Bring a swimsuit.
I stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror. Tall. Lanky. Pale. Jake, meanwhile, looked like he'd stepped out of a TikTok—tan, athletic, effortlessly cool. The kind of guy who probably had spinach smoothies for breakfast and actually enjoyed them.
"You going?" My little sister leaned against the doorframe, spinning a basketball on her finger. "Or are you gonna stay home and overthink it again?"
"I'm going," I said, though my stomach did this nervous little flip thing. "Just need to find my trunks."
Friday came way too fast. By the time I walked into Jake's backyard, half the sophomore class was already there. The pool glittered like something from a movie, complete with a diving board and those fancy underwater lights. Music thumped. People laughed.
I froze. Everyone looked so confident, so comfortable in their skin. I tugged at my shirt, suddenly hyper-aware of every flaw.
Then I saw Maya—my crush since we'd been assigned as lab partners in September. She waved and started walking toward me, and I panicked. I'd grabbed some spinach dip from the snack table like five minutes ago. Was it still in my teeth? I started doing that subtle tongue-sweep thing that everyone does but nobody talks about.
"Hey!" Maya grinned. "You gonna go swimming or just stand there looking mysterious?"
"Swimming," I managed. "Definitely swimming."
Then Jake did a cannonball off the diving board, sending a wave of chlorinated water toward us. Maya shrieked and grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the pool.
"Come on!"
And in that moment, I realized: nobody was watching me. Nobody was judging. They were just... having fun. I jumped in, chlorine and youth and possibility filling my lungs, and for the first time in forever, I didn't overthink it. I just swam.
