Pool Party Panic
Maya's stomach did cartwheels as she stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching her towel like a lifeline. Everyone else was already in the water, laughing and splashing like they'd been friends forever. Meanwhile, she felt about as smooth as a cat in a bathtub – awkward, anxious, and ready to bolt.
"You coming in or what?" Jake called from the pool. His hair was wet, and he was grinning like he didn't have a care in the world. Jake, who'd somehow become the most popular guy at school since transferring in September. Jake, who was currently looking right at her.
Maya's face burned. She hadn't even brought a swimsuit. Who shows up to a pool party without a swimsuit? Someone who's socially doomed, that's who.
"I'm good!" she squeaked. "Just... enjoying the sun."
What was she doing here anyway? She'd barely survived last weekend when her group chat had exploded with drama. Now she was voluntarily putting herself in another social minefield. Genius.
Then she saw it – a massive black bear of a dog charging toward the refreshment table, knocking over cups and sending chips flying. Chaos erupted. Someone screamed. Jake and his friends rushed to help, slipping and sliding in their haste.
And just like that, Maya moved. She didn't think. She just grabbed the dog's collar – he was actually a huge fluffy Newfie, not a bear at all – and steered him away from the chaos, talking softly like she did with her own anxious cat back home.
"Hey buddy, it's okay, you're just excited..."
The dog calmed instantly. His owner came running over, breathless. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry! Barnaby got loose..."
"It's cool," Maya found herself saying, her heart pounding but not from panic anymore. "He's just a good boy who wants snacks."
When she looked up, Jake was watching her with actual respect. Not that fake stuff people gave the popular kids, but real recognition.
"That was honestly badass," he said, dripping water but somehow not looking awkward at all. "You good with animals?"
"I guess?" Maya shrugged, suddenly feeling... not invisible. Not weird. Just herself.
"Wanna help me clean up this mess?" Jake gestured at the scattered snacks. "Then you can tell me about your cat. I have this cat situation at home..."
Maya smiled. "Yeah. Yeah, I can do that."
And just like that, the panic was gone. She was still at a pool party without a swimsuit, still the new girl who didn't know anyone, but somehow, that didn't matter anymore. She jumped in – shoes and all – to help Jake salvage the snacks, and for the first time all night, she didn't feel like drowning. She felt like she was finally swimming.
