Pool Party Panic

Marcus stood by the edge of the pool, clutching his phone like a lifeline. The summer bash was in full swing—people dancing, music bumping, and somehow everyone already knowing exactly what they were doing. Except him. He'd spent two hours perfecting his hair and picking his outfit, only to arrive and realize he was still the most awkward person there.

"Yo Marcus!" yelled Jake from across the yard. "Stop lurking and get in the water!"

Marcus's stomach did that thing where it felt like it was rewriting the laws of physics. He'd barely dipped his toes in the shallow end when something caught his eye—a golden retriever puppy darting between people's legs, carrying a bright neon hat in its mouth like it was the world's most precious treasure.

"Hey! That's my hat!" screamed Sophia, the junior class vice president and actual human goddess. She was already running after the dog, and suddenly the whole party was watching.

Marcus didn't think. He just moved. Something about seeing someone else lose their cool made him forget his own anxiety. He bolted after them, cutting through the crowd like his life depended on it.

The dog made a sharp turn toward the deep end, hat still firmly gripped in its jaws. Sophia was right behind it, but she wasn't watching where she was going. Her foot caught on someone's bag, and she went down—hard.

Everything slowed down. The dog skidded to a stop, hat forgotten. Sophia pushed herself up, red-faced and probably wanting to teleport into another dimension.

But then Marcus was there, helping her up, and somehow they were both laughing. Sophia's perfect hair was a mess, her designer hat was slobber-covered on the ground, and yet she'd never looked more real. More human.

"I think your hat's been through better days," Marcus said, gesturing to the neon fabric now floating in the pool.

Sophia groaned, but she was smiling. "Ugh, whatever. It looked cute on TikTok anyway."

The dog chose that moment to shake itself off directly next to them, spraying water everywhere. Marcus and Sophia locked eyes, dripping wet and completely ridiculous, and for the first time all night, the awkwardness felt okay. Better than okay.

"I'm Marcus, by the way," he said.

"Sophia." She paused. "You wanna grab some food? I'm starving after literally chasing my hat across three time zones."

Marcus grinned. Maybe this party wasn't so terrible after all.
