Pool Party Panic

Maya's palms were sweating, which was embarrassing because she was literally standing at the edge of a pool.

This was it – her first real pool party. The kind that would determine her entire social standing for sophomore year. She'd been obsessively checking the group chat all morning.

"u coming??" Jordan had texted for the third time.

A bear in oversized swim trunks cannonballed into the deep end, sending a wave of chlorinated water sloshing over Maya's exposed legs. Some kids laughed; others glared.

Tyler. The human disaster who somehow charmed everyone. Some people called him "the bear" behind his back – not exactly a compliment, but he owned it somehow.

Maya's stomach twisted harder. She'd forgotten her swimsuit. Standing there in regular clothes at a pool party was basically social suicide. She should've just stayed home and scrolled through TikTok like usual.

"You coming in?" Jordan's voice cut through her panic. He stood waist-deep in water, that effortless fox-like grin making her stomach do actual backflips. Why did he have to be so annoyingly gorgeous?

"I, um..." Maya stammered. "Forgot my suit."

The moment hung there, awkward and heavy. She braced for someone to say something weird, for the embarrassment to crush her completely.

Instead, Tyler hauled himself out of the pool, water streaming from his massive frame like he was some kind of giant sea creature. He grabbed a fluorescent pink pool noodle and tossed it to her.

"Emergency swimming situation resolved," he announced like it was the most normal thing in the world. "All credit to my lifeguard training. Which I don't actually have."

Maya caught the noodle, confused. "Wait, what?"

"Just..." Tyler's ears turned pink, which was actually kind of adorable on this giant human bear. "I noticed you looking at the pool earlier, and you seemed stressed, and my sister gets like that before swim meets, and I have extra shorts in my car that might fit because nobody ever plans these things, and I'm talking too much, aren't I?"

Jordan burst out laughing. "Dude, you're the worst wingman ever. But also the best one?"

The pool party's noise seemed to muffle as Maya stood there, holding a stupid pink pool noodle, while Tyler awkwardly offered her his spare gym shorts and Jordan grinned at her like she was already part of some inside joke she didn't even know existed.

A real fox darted through the bushes nearby, catching her eye with its clever, knowing gaze before disappearing. Because apparently the universe decided today was the day for all the fox references.

"Alright then," Maya said, pulling the oversized shorts on over her jeans. "Emergency swimming situation accepted."

She jumped into the pool, fully clothed, creating the most epic splash she could manage. Jordan and Tyler both cheered.

Sometimes the best moments happened when you stopped overthinking and just cannonballed into the deep end.
