Pool Party Lightning Strike

Maya dragged herself through the last week of school like a literal **zombie**, fueled by nothing but iced coffee and pure spite. Junior year had chewed her up and spit her out, leaving her with a GPA that barely survived and social battery at 0%.

Then came Jordan's pool party—the social event of the summer. Maya's crush, Alex, would be there. Naturally, she had a full-blown existential crisis over what to wear. Her friends group chat went absolutely feral about it.

"You're not gonna **bear** your midriff in that," Kai said when she sent a fit pic. "No cap, it's giving CPAP machine."

"Rude."

"It's giving, 'I just rolled out of bed and this is my villain origin story.'"

Maya settled on a vintage tank and board shorts—comfort over aesthetic, whatever. She was lowkey terrified but showed up anyway.

The party was already iconic when she arrived—people cannonballing, music bumping, vibes immaculate. Maya posted up by the snack table, clutching a seltzer like it was her only lifeline. Social anxiety doing its thing, fr.

Then Alex actually approached her. Her heart did something illegal.

"Hey, you made it," Alex said. Their eyes sparkled with something—interest? amusement? Maya couldn't tell.

"Yeah," she managed, trying to play it cool. "Your pool's legit."

Before Alex could respond, the sky tore open. **Lightning** forked across the horizon like something from a Marvel movie, followed by thunder that shook the ground. Everyone screamed and scrambled toward the house, Maya and Alex caught in the chaos together.

They ended up huddled under the porch overhang, shoulders touching, rain dumping around them. Alex looked at her with that expression again.

"So," they said over the thunder, "you doing anything tomorrow?"

Maya's zombie brain short-circuited. Was this happening? Actually happening?

"I'm free," she said, trying to sound chill while internally screaming.

"Cool. Me too."

Sometimes the universe sends lightning—literally. And sometimes, just sometimes, it sends you exactly what you didn't know you needed. Maya's summer was about to get interesting. Finally.
